Lead Backend Developer (Node.js)

Summary

Andersen is seeking a Lead Backend Developer (Node.js) for a global UK-based transport leader. The role involves enhancing digital solutions to improve the customer journey for long-distance coach services.

The customer is a leading international public transport operator headquartered in the UK, delivering over one billion passenger journeys annually across more than ten countries including Spain, the United States, Germany, and Morocco. Listed on the London Stock Exchange, the company offers a diverse portfolio of services ranging from long-distance coaches and urban buses to rail, airport shuttles, school transport, and demand-responsive transit. With a workforce exceeding 50,000 employees, it is committed to sustainable mobility, aiming to drive modal shift, reduce emissions, and support greener cities.

The project is focused on upgrading the digital customer journey for a long-distance coach service by integrating a configurable web and app solution with internal systems.

Responsibilities

• Providing technical leadership to the development squad – guide the team, support technical growth, and ensure high-quality delivery.
• Designing and validating architecture and technical solutions, in close collaboration with the Software Architect and client team.
• Defining and driving integration strategies for partner APIs – including data formats, API design (REST), authentication, performance, and scalability.
• Participating in and leading workshops and technical planning sessions with onsite and nearshore teams, including stakeholders from the client side.
• Overseeing the implementation of API integrations, ensuring correctness in data mapping, routing, orchestration, and resilience.
• Maintaining code quality by conducting code reviews, introducing best practices, and ensuring adequate test coverage.
• Working closely with the Project Manager and Business Analyst to support sprint planning, backlog grooming, and task breakdown.
• Creating and maintaining technical documentation to support long-term maintainability and handovers.

Requirements

• Experience as a Backend Developer (Node.js) for 3+ years.
• Experience in full delivery lifecycle: design, build, test, deploy, support.
• Strong understanding of RESTful API principles and best practices, Event driven architectures, Microservices based architectures.
• Good understanding of common integration patterns.
• Strong understanding of Agile delivery frameworks, predominantly Kanban.
• Experience planning and managing technical delivery.
• Good understanding of automated testing, building pipelines, API gateways, and automated deployment.
• Able to collaborate effectively with Infrastructure/DevOps to coordinate environment builds and rollout strategies.
• Experience with AWS (API gateway, Docker, ECS (Containers).
• Proven track record of stakeholder management – acting as bridge between technical and business (digital trading) teams.
• Level of English – Intermediate+ and above.

Desired skills

• Active AWS/Azure Certifications.
• Experience delivering complex API/platform projects.
